Trump Signs First Veto To Secure Funding For Border Wall Says Is'Proud

"Today I am vetoing this resolution", said Trump.

Trump made the construction of a wall along the nearly 2,000-mile-long US-Mexico border a cornerstone of his 2016 presidential campaign, saying Mexico would pay for it. Trump issued a veto on Friday, preventing Congress's attempt to terminate his national emergency declaration seeking to circumvent lawmakers and appropriate billions of dollars for his southern border wall.

And Trump made clear how he plans to respond, tweeting the word "VETO!" in all-caps moments after Thursday's vote. After many had spoken, Trump dramatically signed his veto message and then held the document up for the cameras to capture.

Trump expressed pride in the Republicans who did not vote to support the resolution and said later that he had sympathy for those who defied him, adding they did what they had to do.

A dozen Republicans joined with Senate Democrats on Thursday to back the joint resolution disapproving of Trump's emergency declaration. The emergency declaration allows the president to redirect funds from other accounts such as military construction to the Southern border wall.

"We tried to cut a deal", Lee said.

"The fact that this is an emergency is undeniable", Nielsen said.

Trump originally declared a national emergency on the border last month after Congress granted only a fraction of the $5.7 billion he requested for a wall on the border.

Republicans, Pelosi said, "will have to choose between their partisan hypocrisy and their sacred oath to support and defend the Constitution".

The renegade conservatives had condemned the emergency declaration for setting up a unsafe precedent for a president while emphasising that they still agreed with Mr Trump's tough border security policies.

The emergency declaration is being challenged in court as an unconstitutional usurpation of Congress' power of the purse.

Trump also has maintained he has the legal authority to act. "Think of that", he said. "Ideally, they shouldn't even sue in this case, if you want to know the truth".

Trump's national emergency declaration almost a month ago is paired with a number of executive actions created to make approximately $8 billion of funding available to begin construction on a wall along the southern border.
