Trump's Top Security Aide Calls US-North Korea Summit A "Success"

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump shake hands in Hanoi where their summit was seen as a disappointment

South Korea President Moon Jae-in on Monday urged the United States and North Korea to quickly resume denuclearisation talks after their Hanoi summit last week ended without a deal.

"What he's trying to convey is that he's got a hard line to walk to negotiate with Kim Jong Un", Bolton said on "Fox News Sunday", arguing that Trump's statement did not necessarily mean that he believed what Kim was saying. 'Never done when a president is overseas. "While I believe the United States-North Korea negotiations will eventually reach an agreement, it's never desirable for a vacuum in dialogue or stalemate to be prolonged", he said, urging South Korean officials to find ways for the USA and North Korea to narrow their differences.

Bolton also appeared on CNN's State of the Union, where he defended Trump who said he took Kim "at his word" when the North Korean leader claimed he knew nothing about the alleged torture of imprisoned USA student Otto Warmbier.

Cohen, who was Trump's lawyer for a decade, called the president a liar, crook and racist during his testimony to Congress.

Mr Bolton was also asked if he takes North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at his word that he didn't know of Mr Warmbier's suspected torture.

Trump said he believed Kim's claim that he did not know what happened to Otto Warmbier, who died at age 22 days after being sent back to the United States in 2017. "I don't view it as a failure at all when American national interests are protected", Bolton added.

After sending out his National Security Adviser John Bolton to the Sunday talk shows to describe the summit as a success, Trump showed his frustration about the results by lashing out at Democrats.

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy directly opposed Trump's viewpoint in an interview on ABC News' This Week, saying he believes Kim was aware of Warmbier's arrest.

According to a senior USA official, Pyongyang in return offered only to close down "a portion of the Yongbyon complex", a sprawling site covering multiple nuclear facilities - and the North is believed to have other uranium enrichment plants. A day after the summit, he said in a speech that South Korea will negotiate with the USA on ways to restart the frozen joint projects north of the border - a mountain resort and a factory park where South Korean firms used North Korean labour to produce goods.

Algerians March en Masse, Calling on Bouteflika to Step Down
Bouteflika, who has been ruling Algeria since 1999, officially announced his presidential bid on February 10. Bouteflika, who has been in office for two decades and turns 82 on Sunday, has rarely been seen in public.

Bolton said while Trump accepts what Kim said, it does not mean he accepts it as reality.

"I think Kim knew what happened, which was wrong", McCarthy said. Kim will be able to portray himself to his people and supporters as the charismatic head of a nuclear-armed power, not an global pariah that starves its citizens so it can build weapons.

Mr Bolton said he gives his advice and opinions to the president and Mr Trump "makes up his own mind".

Bolton said Trump has "turned traditional diplomacy on its head, and after all in the case of North Korea, why not?"

Moon met Kim three times past year and was trying to facilitate his nuclear negotiations with the US.

Washington and Seoul announced on Sunday that they will eliminate massive annual springtime military drills and replace them with smaller exercises, in what they called an effort to support diplomacy with North Korea.

"Firstly, complete dismantlement of the Yongbyon nuclear facility was discussed". "That was my position long before I became President". He also told CBS's Face the Nation, "The president held firm to his view".

Moon noted that improving relations between the two Koreas within the boundaries of sanctions could also foster relations between the USA and North Korea.
