If the deal is defeated, Parliament would then vote on whether to leave the European Union without a deal or delay its departure date.

After the resignations of nine Labour Party members last week, and amid the prospect of more, the party's leader, Jeremy Corbyn, dropped his long-standing resistance to a second vote on leaving the bloc.

If it is rejected, lawmakers will vote the next day on whether to leave the bloc without an agreement.

Mrs May told the House of Commons this week: "I know members across the House are genuinely anxious that time is running out, that if the Government doesn't come back with a further meaningful vote, or it loses that vote, Parliament won't have time to make its voice heard on the next steps".

While momentum for a second referendum has grown in recent months - and advocates swarmed Westminster today - it's not clear how many MPs actually want a do-over.

It was tabled by a small group of pro-European former Labour and Conservative MPs, who have broken away to form The Independent Group, with support from others including the Scottish National Party and Liberal Democrats.

She has promised to put a revised deal to a vote by 12th March after MPs overwhelmingly rejected it last month, calling for changes to the backstop.

Despite the "tortured flow-chart" that May's statement implied, in any "serious sense" there are not three votes or stages, but one, says Matthew Parris in The Times.

May's dramatic announcement on Tuesday that she would allow MPs to vote on delaying the UK's European Union withdrawal beyond 29 March took the sting out of an evening of Brexit votes which had been expected to feature a number of ministerial resignations.

Meanwhile, the EU, which has been firm in its refusal to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement, signalled it is also eager to avoid a no deal, with European Council President Donald Tusk saying on Monday that "an extension would be a rational solution" in light of the current situation.

What was Labour's Brexit stance before?

Not satisfied with this, Williamson also booked a room in the British parliament to screen a documentary next week called "Witch Hunt" produced by Labour member and prominent activist Jackie Walker about her suspension from the Labour Party for stating that Jews were behind the transatlantic slave trade.

The United Kingdom is due to leave in 30 days but Prime Minister Theresa May has so far failed to get parliament to ratify the deal she agreed in November, so on Tuesday she opened up the possibility of a delay until the end of June.

He campaigned to leave the European Union in the 2016 referendum and backed the approach set out by Mrs May at Chequers previous year, when a number of Brexit-backing ministers resigned.

However, Labour is still facing fresh divisions over the timing and strategy for backing a second referendum, with some anti-Brexit MPs anxious it will be put to a vote and defeated before there is a real chance of a parliamentary majority.

That is the date on which MPs will vote again on her deal.

In an earlier vote Labour had its Brexit policies rejected by MPs.

Pushing her deal: Mrs May at Prime Minister's QuestionsAre we still leaving the European Union on March 29?

Another option would be a two-part question on the issue of Mrs May's deal. However, these would ultimately have to be decided by parliament.

This is perhaps the most significant hurdle to a second referendum: what will people be asked to vote on this time around?
