US General: No F-35 jet sale to Turkey if it buys Russian Federation system

U.S. should not sell F-35 jets to Turkey unless it drops Russian system: U.S. general

The top USA general for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and military operations in Europe said Tuesday he needs more troops and warships in Europe to meet a growing threat from Russian Federation. Scaparrotti is also the NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

Citing the phantom menace of "Russian aggression" amid Washington's withdrawal from the INF treaty, the head of the US European Command has asked the Senate for more troops, jets, missiles and ships, to "defend" European allies. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Scaparrotti said, "In light of Russia's modernizing and increasingly aggressive force posture EUCOM [European Command] recommends augmenting our assigned and rotational forces to enhance our deterrence posture".

Scaparrotti also said that the United States is considering helping Ukraine improve its military sniper capabilities, although this would only be done through "policy deliberations".

However, Daniel Ives, analyst at Wedbush Securities, said: "Selling into China has clear hurdles and this is a reminder of the pitfalls when betting on growth in the region".

The top USA general in Europe said on Tuesday that he would recommend that the United States should not sell Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 jets to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Turkey if Ankara does not drop plans to buy S-400 surface-to-air missile defense systems from Russian Federation.

Last month, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Ankara's purchase of Russia's S-400 missile defense system was a done deal.
