US orders Germany to dump Huawei

An embassy spokesman declined to comment specifically on a Wall Street Journal report about the USA government's first explicit warning to Germany of consequences if China's Huawei Technologies Co gets a role in Germany's next-generation mobile infrastructure.

"To the extent there are untrusted vendors in the networks of an ally, that could raise future questions about the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive communications within that country, as well as between that country and its allies", the spokesperson said.

'This could in the future jeopardize nimble cooperation and some sharing of information, ' the spokesman said. According to the report, the U.S. doesn't plan to end its intelligence sharing with Germany in the event this equipment is used, but rather limit the scope of the data.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel (right) and U.S. ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell pose for the media during a reception of the diplomatic corps at the German governmental guest house in Meseberg.

Altmaier told French news agency AFP he could not comment on the letter's contents, but said that: "We will respond quickly".

Former Irish soldier `detained in Syria´
The woman, who held the rank of private, left the Defence Forces around eight years ago and was subsequently radicalised. According to Irish police, the woman is thought to have been radicalised and fled for Syria several years ago.

Grenell sent his letter the day after German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said Germany wishes to avoid banning Huawei but will ensure all of the components in its 5G network are secure.

The legal amendments are still being finalized within Germany's ruling coalition, a ministry spokesman said. In the letter, Grenell warned the Germans their access to US intelligence could be scaled back if they use Huawei equipment, which the USA argues could be compromised by Chinese intelligence.

The battle with Huawei is one of many conflicts in Washington's disputes with China.

The year ended with the arrest of Huawei's chief financial officer in Canada at United States request, to the consternation of China.

German government officials meanwhile, argue that they have seen little evidence suggesting Huawei would use its equipment to spy on its users.
