Actor Will Smith was reportedly named to portray tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams' father in an upcoming film about the family and their roots, but some people don't believe that Smith is black enough for the role.

Back in 2017, Venus told The Philadelphia Tribune that "It goes without saying what my dad has done for Serena and I, and changing the game of tennis, and for what he's done for the sport, too". Despite having no tennis background, he overcame tremendous hardship, skepticism and his own troubled past to raise two of the game's greatest players.

The A-list actor was cast to play the character of Richard - who trained his daughters from an early age in cracked and weedy courts in Compton, strategically developed a professional 78-page plan for their careers. The sisters have 14 Grand Slam doubles championships. Serena won her first at the U.S. Open in 1999, and Venus got her first title at Wimbledon in 2000. It certainly seems in hindsight that a glass ceiling was shattered.

The film has a lot of humour, mostly derived from the children's joy and delight at Billy's newfound superpowers. Billy also uses his new adult form to purchase beer from a convenience store.

According to Deadline, Smith is attached to a spec script from Zach Baylin for King Richard, a film about Richard Williams' life as he raised two of the most accomplished women's tennis players of all-time.

Smith will next star in Disney's Aladdin, which hits theaters in May, and he recently stepped away from the Suicide Squad sequel. Allan Mandelbaum and Caleeb Pinkett will serve as executive producers with Mary Solomon and Rick Rickertsen co-producing. He hasn't set his next film, and clearly this is something he's passionate about and it could happen quickly.
