Winx breaks World Record

Record win for the queen of the world

Record win for the queen of the world

Hugh Bowman celebrates Winx's record breaking victory in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

Winx was priced at just $1.08, but that didn't deter punters with one courageous person placing a record bet of $280,000 on the champion horse minutes before the race.

While she's shown few signs of slowing down, the Victory could prove to be one of Winx's last as the curtains begin to close on the champion mare's breathtaking career.

"She is incredible, Blake (Shinn) really made it a test today, like Josh Parr did on Red Excitement once before but she can just cover all bases this mare, she is just an unbelievable athlete, there is no more words to describe her", jockey Hugh Bowman said.

Winx is expected to make light work of her opposition in today's G1 Chipping Norton (1600m) and one punter is out to make a quick $21,510.

"Its probably one of his best runs ever outside of winning the Doncaster", Webster said.

When the starter finally set them on their way, Happy Clapper strode to the front with jockey Blake Shinn allowing Winx's main danger to stride freely in the lead but his trainer Pat Webster said it was "just a fleeting moment" where he dared to dream.

From the turn Winx started to eat into Happy Clapper's advantage and headed him nearing the 100m before racing away until Bowman turned off the engines and Winx cruised the line to the cheers of her 14,831 adoring fans.

"I knew (Happy Clapper jockey Blake Shinn) would try and a rabbit out of the hat".

He became Olympic gold medalist at the Beijing Olympic Games back in 2008 after defeating Cuba's Emilio Correa in the final fight. "My injuries have taken a toll, both on mind and body, and these things have contributed to impact my performance in the ring".

And Winx tested his nerves when she got a bit agitated in the barrier and then had to stand still while Libran was backed out and inspected.

"She's a once in a lifetime horse, she's a once in a two centuries of Australian racing horse, I've never seen anything like it", McAvaney said.

"I thought it would do her the world of good to tell you the truth".

"It was a good test for her and it will bring her on nicely for her next couple of runs. No cotton wool treatment - we wouldn't expect any". "I just hope today doesn't take too much out of him".

"I can see the sun going down, and hopefully we can get through two more races". Under pressure she is very good.

Winx will run next in the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill in three weeks before her farewell in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 13.

With the win, Winx passed Hurricane Fly, the Irish Willie Mullins-trained horse who had won 22 Group 1 wins.

Happy Clapper will head to Melbourne to run in the A$5 million All-Star Mile at Flemington on March 16.

"She's just a freak and she had to put up a freakish performance to beat Happy Clapper".
