Action 'Dumbo' struggles to soar at box office

The movie opened to a huge figure this weekend, taking in an estimated $45 million in the U.S. and Canada this weekend to stand easily at No. 1, but it didn't make as much money as people expected it to.

EW reports that it was projected to bank between $50 million and $58 million for its domestic opening-weekend. Even if Dumbo isn't the biggest success, Disney is expected to have a massive year at the box office. Others like "Beauty and the Beast" in 2017 and "Alice in Wonderland" in 2010 were box office hits for the company, and made more than $1 billion. While $45 million is not a disastrous opening for the film, it is a disappointing one because Disney and box office experts both expected "Dumbo" would make $50 million.

The remake, which boasts an all-star cast with Michael Keaton, Colin Farrell and Danny DeVito, opened to middling reviews with critics as well.

Still, the remake fell short of early box office projections, both at home and overseas at the global box office.

Dumbo pushed last weekend's box office leader, Us, down to second place but the Universal horror film still brought in a respectable US$33.6 million.

In third spot was another Disney film, Captain Marvel, which had USA ticket sales of US$20.5 million, pushing its cumulative worldwide total to just under US$1 billion.

Lionsgate's Five Feet Apart, featuring Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse as a pair of enamoured teens who must keep their distance as they deal with cystic fibrosis, came in fourth at US$6.3 million.

Rounding out the top 10 are Wonder Park in sixth place with $4.9 million, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in seventh with $4.2 million, Hotel Mumbai in eighth with $3.2 million, Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral in ninth with $2.7 million and newcomer The Beach Bum in tenth with $1.8 million.

The second weekend total for "Us" marked a 53% drop from its opening weekend haul.
