A primary school has lifted its lockdown as police continue to negotiate with a man who allegedly fired shots at a couple before locking himself in a West Auckland house.

A person at the store told 1 NEWS there are police cars everywhere and they've heard reports that someone was walking around with a gun.

Police swarmed the Glen Eden area about 10am today local time.

Part of West Coast Road, between Glendale Road and Swan Hill Drive, were cordoned off and Auckland Transport advised drivers to avoid the area. Please do not phone or come to the school as you will not be attended to.

Talented Tots childcare, an early childcare centre on West Coast Rd, also confirmed it went into lockdown this morning. "We will keep you updated when the lock-down is over".

AAF suspends operations after just 8 weeks
The news comes a few weeks after the league was bailed out by a $ 250 million investment by Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon . Shortly after Dundon's financial involvement, the AAF scoffed at the idea that the money was needed to keep the league alive.

After spending over an hour in lockdown, the Glen Eden Primary School received confirmation they were able to lift the security measures.

The NZ Herald spoke to local resident Richard Ramage, who was passing by and said he had seen a heavy police presence following some sort of disturbance.

"Police are making inquiries. The Armed Offenders Squad has been deployed to the area as a precaution", a police spokesman said.

The New Zealand Herald reports the man is refusing to come out of the property.

New Zealand schools have remained on high alert following the mass shooting at two Christchurch mosques on March 15.
