A primary school has lifted its lockdown as police continue to negotiate with a man who allegedly fired shots at a couple before locking himself in a West Auckland house.

A person at the store told 1 NEWS there are police cars everywhere and they've heard reports that someone was walking around with a gun.

Police swarmed the Glen Eden area about 10am today local time.

Part of West Coast Road, between Glendale Road and Swan Hill Drive, were cordoned off and Auckland Transport advised drivers to avoid the area. Please do not phone or come to the school as you will not be attended to.

Talented Tots childcare, an early childcare centre on West Coast Rd, also confirmed it went into lockdown this morning. "We will keep you updated when the lock-down is over".

The New Zealand Herald reports the man is refusing to come out of the property.
