Asus ROG Second Generation Gaming Smartphone Rumored for Q3 2019 Release

The ROG Phone, Asus' first gaming smartphone was quite expensive at launch, even when compared to other flagships released on the market around the same time.

In December 2018, the company unveiled a rejuvenation plan, aiming to make a turnaround of its money-losing handset unit in three years by shifting focus to gaming and premium models. However, the Taiwanese electronics maker isn't alone in its quest. The ROG phone could play nearly every game out there without breaking into a sweat, hopefully that will be the case with the upcoming ROG phone successor. Asus' direct competition is with the Razer Phone followed by Xiaomi's sub-brand Black Shark. However, this report reveals that Asus is planning to bring the device to the market in the third quarter of the year.

If the cooperation with Tencent is realized, it could provide a lifeline to Asustek's embattled smartphone business, said the sources, although profits generated from gaming smartphone models are still not significant. At this moment, we're not sure if the successor will be called Asus ROG Phone 2 but it wouldn't be surprising if the company chose to go ahead with that moniker. The partnership is aimed at capturing a growing interest among the Chinese youth for gaming devices, particularly smartphones. But we'll have to wait till Q3 2019 for more details.
