Bill to extend Brexit process to prevent no deal becomes law

No Brexit breakthrough yet between PM May and opposition, Labour says

On her 1,001st day in office, the Prime Minister will hold talks with Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron as European leaders prepare to issue the United Kingdom with a set of demands in exchange for an extension of Article 50, to avoid a no-deal Brexit on Friday.

Better known as the Cooper-Letwin bill, the EU (Withdrawal) No 5 Bill is legislation created to prevent a no-deal calamity for the UK.

It is a last-ditch attempt to keep control after parliament rejected May's own Brexit deal three times.

May has asked the European Union to delay Brexit until June 30, to give Britain time to approve and implement a withdrawal agreement.

Asked last night if the government was being serious about the discussions, Mr Corbyn said: "Talks have to mean a movement and so far there has been no change in those red lines".

May's spokeswoman said she hoped further formal talks could take place later on Monday, adding: "The PM wants us to be able to agree with the opposition as soon as possible".

In a video message recorded in her Chequers country retreat at the weekend, Mrs May said both sides in the cross-party talks will have to compromise.

The Conservative Party has drawn up emergency plans to select candidates despite Theresa May repeatedly saying she is determined to secure a Brexit deal which will avoid the need to participate in the elections.

"We are committed to finding a way through in order to ensure we can leave the European Union and deliver on the referendum", a Downing Street spokesman said last night.

It is not clear whether that offer still stands should May get her deal through with the help of the Labour party.

English Premier League: Everton edge Arsenal to stop Gunners from going third
And Leno, 27, gave his reaction to the disappointing result after the game after the Gunners dropped crucial points in the top-four race.

"It seems utterly incredible that he has now been invited into Downing Street to negotiate a Brexit deal", he wrote in his Daily Telegraph column.

Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, a leading Brexiteer, said a customs union would "enslave" the United Kingdom.

May's deal includes the legally-binding terms of Britain's withdrawal, and also a political declaration outlining the principles of a future relationship.

Labour could seek to lock the agreement into law, making it much more hard for May's successor to change strategy.

"I fundamentally object to it on the grounds that it is totally unconventional", she said.

"It would mean that Slovakia or Lithuania - to say nothing of France or Germany - would have more say over United Kingdom trade policy than London".

May has already asked Brussels to extend Britain's European Union membership to allow talks with the opposition Labour Party in search of different exit plan - a last-ditch attempt to keep control after parliament rejected her Brexit deal three times.

If they do not agree to an extension, Britain will leave without a deal at 11pm on Friday. The UK has already blown its first Brexit date, March 29.

Britain's parliament is expected later Monday to approve a bill to force the government to delay Brexit.

If passed, May will have to bring a motion to parliament on Tuesday, pledging to request an extension in Brussels the following day and outlining the length of the plan for delay.
