Justine Ruszczyk Damond was hit in the iliac artery, a key artery in the abdomen, by the single shot from Mohamed Noor, now on trial on murder and manslaughter charges in the July 2017 death of the dual citizen of the US and Australia.

Wold said that as Noor and his partner were responding to Damond's report of a possible rape behind her home, they saw a bicyclist and heard a "bang". Lofton said, 1 minute and 19 seconds later, she said "I'm dying" after being shot.

Prosecutors charged Noor with second-degree intentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, saying there is no evidence he faced a threat that justified deadly force.

Ms Damond Ruszczyk had moved to the Midwestern city to marry her American fiancee Don Damond, whose name she had legally adopted. She died a month before their scheduled wedding.

Noor, who is Somali American, is charged with murder and manslaughter in the death of Damond, a 40-year-old dual citizen of the USA and Australia.

Both the prosecution and defence laid out their case in a Minneapolis courtroom over the actions of Mohamed Noor, who is charged with murdering 40-year-old yoga instructor Justine Damond Ruszczyk.

'He was out of town for work and she was inside their home on the phone'.

Ms Damond, barefoot, in her pyjamas and unarmed, went down to the alley to talk to them.

Prosecutors appeared to doubt there was a sudden, startling noise that night, claiming there was no forensic evidence Justine touched Noor's squad vehicle that night.

Prosecutors called up Mr Damond as the first witness during the trial.

Mr Damond said he received a call from investigators, who said his fiance had died. The second time, she was calling to check on the estimated time of arrival for officers.

Despite their longtime marriage being riddled with rumors of infidelity for years, neither party has confirmed them. A source told the New York Post: " Wendy is not in a good way, everyone is so concerned for her".

Noor's attorneys have not said whether he will testify.

Attorneys for Noor, who was sacked after being charged in the case and has never talked to investigators about what happened, argue that he used reasonable force to defend himself and his partner from a perceived threat. Damond sobbed as he described calls from investigators the night of Justine's death, saying he wasn't told an officer had shot her until a second phone call.

Moments later, they said they heard a loud bang at the back of the police auto and then Damon approached, according to investigators and the defense attorney.

"It was a ideal storm with tragic circumstances", Mr Wold said. The call reported a vague threat in an alley at night, and could have been, Wold said, "a classic ambush scenario" and "a set-up".

'(Harrity was) struggling to undo his weapon then this figure instantly appears in his window, raising a right arm.

"It was a ideal storm with disgusting consequences", Wold told the court.

Noor was sacked from the police force previous year when charged.

In court, Mr Lofton sought to sow doubts about the claims of a loud, sudden noise that startled the officers.

Mr Lofton said there was no forensic evidence proving Damond touched the police auto, including a lack of fingerprints.

Defense attorney Tom Plunkett said Noor and his partner, Matthew Harrity, would haven't know they were responding to a possible sexual assault because they didn't hear her 911 calls and were told by dispatchers only that there was a report of a woman screaming behind a building. Lofton said Harrity never said anything at the scene about such a noise, instead mentioning it for the first time some days later in an interview with investigators.

With a jury in place, opening statements are set to begin Tuesday in the trial of a former Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed an unarmed woman.
