He said: " Theresa May now finally seems to be accepting that she can not get support for her deal, though her identifying Jeremy Corbyn as a source of support for Brexit is less surprising.

"This debate, this division, can not drag on much longer", said said from her Downing Street office. But he also said "we need to be open to any proposals that she may bring forward to us".

European Council President Donald Tusk said after Mrs May's statement that the bloc would be "patient" over the next few days as the new process plays out.

May says it would be "unacceptable" to ask British voters to take part in European Parliament elections in May, nearly three years after they voted to leave the bloc.

Mr Adams's resignation is the first since Tuesday's Cabinet meeting and came shortly after Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay said a softer Brexit was the inevitable result of the political balance in the Commons.

May also offered to sit down with opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn to find a deal both parties could agree on.

If May and Corbyn could agree on a plan that MPs supported, the prime minister said she hoped to take it to the April 10 Brussels summit.

The government, she said, would then abide by the decision of the House of Commons.

If she does manage to get her divorce deal across the line by the new April 12 deadline, it may be considered one of the greatest political achievements in the modern ear, or any era but based on everything that's happened so far it has a snowball's chance in you know where.

The group behind the Bill hopes once it has passed the Commons it could be approved by the House of Lords and granted Royal Assent in time for the emergency European Union summit on April 10. "The British Parliament has said itself that it doesn't want a disorderly Brexit".

"We can not avoid failure for them".

Corbyn said his guiding principle would be to "avoid the dangers of crashing out" of the European Union without a deal.

May has been unable to persuade a hardcore eurosceptic group of own lawmakers to back the divorce agreement she struck with the European Union because they argued it did not provide a decisive break with Europe.

"My department and I are committed to delivering on our priorities", he said.

Mr Macron said if a decision were not made soon, Britain would have chosen a no-deal Brexit.

That leaves the country facing a disruptive no-deal Brexit in 10 days.

Cooper has introduced legislation, which Parliament is set to consider, this week, that would require May to seek to extend the Brexit process beyond April 12 in order to prevent a no-deal departure.

Letwin and Cooper will launch their plot to stop No Deal by passing a law compelling Theresa May to ask for a long delay to Brexit.

Earlier, Downing Street officials briefed that Theresa May's cabinet will gather on Tuesday morning for a five hour meeting in a bid to agree on a plan.

The narrowest defeat - 276 votes to 273 - was for a plan to keep Britain in a customs union with the EU, guaranteeing smooth and tariff-free trade in goods.

EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said "a no-deal scenario" has become more likely, while European Central Bank policymaker Francois Villeroy de Galhau said markets needed to price in the growing risk of a no-deal.

Sir Jeffrey said his party was not arguing for a no-deal Brexit but pushing for the prime minister to get a deal by addressing the issue of the backstop.

But Barnier warned: "If the United Kingdom parliament does not vote in favour of the withdrawal agreement in the coming days, then only two options would remain: leaving without an agreement or requesting a longer extension".

According to IHS Markit manufacturing purchasing managers' index, last month's figures indicated an expansion of Britain's manufacturing sector as firms increased their products' production fearing of a no-deal Brexit.
