"The hearing today is not about white nationalism or hate crimes, it's about fear-mongering, power and control", Owens said, casting doubt on whether hate crimes in the USA have risen in recent years.

On the topic of free speech in institutions of higher learning, Owens said that she believes there should be open discussions on college campuses. "To me, that's not nationalism".

"White supremacy, racism, white nationalism, words that once held real meaning, have now become nothing more than election strategies", she claimed.

Lieu's move of pulling out his phone and rolling the clip instantly inspired a meme. In that speech, Owens appears to defend Adolph Hitler and to say that Hitler only went wrong when he chose to "globalize" by expanding beyond Germany. BuzzFeed featured the clip of her response - minus the question and context - in a story in February, leading to a partisan brawl on social media.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) played a video of Candace Owens defending Adolf Hitler's nationalism in a hearing on hate that was attended by the controversial right-wing provocateur.

Ted Lieu said, "Of all the people the Republicans could've selected [for the hearing], they pick Candace Owens".

"Sure, even though I was called despicable", Owens said.

"It's going to shock the committee but not once, not in a single breath of a conversation, did my grandfather tell me that I could not do something because of my skin color", she said. @TedLieu played a recording of Candace Owens' own words about Hitler in front of her. He then played the first 30 second of her disgusting comments about Hitler.

Iran's rival, Saudi Arabia, welcomed the US decision , describing it as a "serious and practical step to combat terrorism". The IRGC is subordinate to, and take orders directly from the Ayatollah.

Lieu said he was addressing his question not to Owens but to Eileen Hershenov, a vice president at the Anti-Defamation League.

The snippet Lieu played was from a December 2018 event in the United Kingdom, where Owens was trying to answer a question from an audience member about the legitimacy of nationalism by pointing out that nationalism and Hitler's ideology of national-socialism were not the same thing.

Owens responded, only to embarrass herself further.

"I think it's pretty apparent that Mr. Lieu believes that black people are stupid and will not pursue the full clip..."

Owens responded that she did not refer to [Lieu] as stupid.

Quickly following her statement, Owens clarified that Hitler was a "homicidal psychotic maniac who was bent on world domination" and not a nationalist because of his tyranny over the Jewish population in Germany. Owens said that she was "deeply offended" by the "insinuation" that she supported Hitler.

"The biggest scandal in American politics is that Democrats have been conning minorities into the belief that we are perpetual victims all but ensuring our failure", she said.
