"I told Nimmo 'I'm not taking the first pitch, '" deGrom said.

DeGrom (2-0) allowed three hits, walked one and ended his streak of five consecutive losses to the lowly Marlins.

NY opened the scoring in the second inning. Wallach struck out swinging.

"Once I got the first two guys, then it became a goal", deGrom said.

DeGrom was asked if he will most remember the strikeout mark from Wednesday or his home run.

"Probably the record strikeouts", deGrom said.

The right-hander has a 26-inning scoreless streak dating to 2018 - eclipsing his previous best of 24 ¹/₃ scoreless innings, established April 21 to May 18 last season. With his 26th straight quality start, deGrom equaled the record established by Bob Gibson in 1968.

"[DeGrom] just does the same thing every time and you look up at the end and it's something really impressive", manager Mickey Callaway said. "He continues this historic run". He's the first NY pitcher to start a season with consecutive double-digit strikeout games.

For the second year in a row, the Mets are off to a 5-1 start and the Marlins have started 2-5. Now a half-game up on Philadelphia, the Mets will need deGrom to turn in many more performances throughout the season to stay on top or within striking distance of Philadelphia.

In San Diego, Manny Machado hit his first home run as a member of the Padres and left-handed starter Joey Lucchesi and two relievers took a five-hit shutout into the ninth against Arizona.

About the only blemish on the night for the Mets was Luis Avilan and Robert Gsellman's struggles. But after RBI doubles by Martin Prado and Rosell Herrera, a run-scoring groundout from Lewis Brinson and Miguel Rojas' RBI single, closer Edwin Diaz came in for one batter and earned the save by retiring Curtis Granderson on a flyout with the tying runner on first.

Betts' two-out grounder hit the third base bag and popped into the outfield for a tiebreaking, two-run double in the ninth.

Jacob deGrom is only the 2nd pitcher to ever do it since 1977.

The Mets had a 6:10 pm game in Miami on Wednesday and closed out a 3-game sweep of the Marlins.

The Mets added a pair of runs in the eighth on pinch-hit RBI singles by Dominic Smith and Wilson Ramos.
