Erdogan vows to accept poll recount | World

In a major upset to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the opposition took control of Ankara, the capital, and won a tight race for Istanbul in the country's local elections.

On Saturday, a party spokesman said the AKP would accept the results of local election recounts in Istanbul as well as Ankara, no matter which party is declared the victor.

Ekrem Imamoglu, the CHP's Istanbul mayoral candidate, said on Monday he was still leading with a margin of some 15,500 votes - down from 25,000 - after up to 95 percent of partial recounts had been completed.

Losing Istanbul would be a blow to Erdogan, who built his political career as mayor of the city before becoming prime minister and later president.

But Erdogan said that "nobody has the right to put on airs of victory in a city of more than 10 million voters with a 13,000-14,000-vote lead".

President Erdogan said he would only accept the Istanbul result when the YSK had processed all the appeals.

He added, however, that his party would accept results confirmed by the top electoral board.

The CHP called on the Supreme Electoral Council to remain impartial in its decision on whether or not to proceed with a recount. "There was some theft at the ballot box".

Main Opposition Republican People's Party's (CHP) claim that 93% of the votes have been recounted is false, as only 6% have been counted, Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Deputy Chairman Ali İhsan Yavuz told reporters Monday. His comments sent the lira tumbling to as far as 5.7120 against the United States dollar and was trading at 5.6910 at 2.15pm United Kingdom time.

"Will the Istanbul election be repeated?" "May it be Istanbul's turn next, " he said. A resumption of weekly repo auctions by the Central Bank had added to lira weakness, the banker added. But the YSK upheld the result and on Monday Yavas formally received his mandate as new mayor.
