Ernie Grunfeld, one of the longest-tenured GMs in the National Basketball Association, is out of a job.

According to a press release from the franchise, Grunfeld has been fired as president of the Wizards after 16 years on the job.

"We did not meet our stated goals of qualifying for the playoffs this season and, despite playing with injuries to several key players, we have a culture of accountability and a responsibility of managing to positive outcomes", Chairman and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment Ted Leonsis said in a written statement. But Washington never made it past the second round of the playoffs.

The 63-year-old Grunfeld had been with the organization since 2003.

Theresa May statement: PM says United Kingdom needs further extension to Article 50
Theresa May will ask the European Union for an extension to the Brexit deadline to "break the log jam" in Parliament. She said now is a "decisive moment in the history of these islands, and it requires national unity".

The club went 568-724 during Grunfeld's tenure with eight postseason appearances.

Upon hearing the news, Wizards guard John Wall thank Grunfeld for bringing him to D.C. With a record of 32-46, the Wizards are ranked 11th in the Eastern Conference which is a disappointment considering they made the playoffs last season.

Wall is expected to be sidelined for much, if not all, of next season, too.

He played nine seasons in the National Basketball Association with three teams. The Wizards only advanced past the first round once during that period. They never advanced past that round under Grunfeld.

Senior vice president of basketball operations Tommy Sheppard will handle Grunfeld's duties until a replacement is hired at the end of the season. The Wizards plan to interview candidates to replace Grunfeld.
