A blaze on the eighth floor of the popular Central World Complex in Bangkok yesterday left three people dead and at least eight others injured.

The Central World Complex, which includes a shopping mall and a hotel frequented by tourists, was evacuated, according to operator Central Pattana.

The fire department said that the blaze was extinguished, but that smoke still needed to be released from several floors.

The blaze at Central World broke out at around 6 pm, a spokesperson for the Erawan Medical Emergency centre told reporters.

Local media showed video of one person jumping from smoked-filled window to escape the fire.

Bangkok's governor, Aswin Kwanmuang, told a Wednesday night news conference that an investigation into the blaze would start on Thursday.

Assawin said the fire was believed to have started in a document storage room in one of the buildings that is part of the complex.

At least one of those who died had fallen from the building, local reports and witnesses say.

Shocking footage shared on social media shows the smoke pouring out of the burning skyscraper.

Pinit Arayasilapathorn, director of Pathum Wan district, said in a television interview earlier that the fire broke out on the eighth floor of the 55-storey hotel. Sirens from emergency vehicles wailed as they tried to make their way through the congested city's gridlocked traffic.

The mall typically would have been busy with shoppers as well as diners headed to the many restaurants inside.

CentralWorld was torched in 2010 when anti-government protesters known as the Red Shirts were cleared from the centre after months of demonstrations.

The shopping centre's website describes it as the largest lifestyle shopping destination in Bangkok.
