The Libyan National Army (LNA) force of military strongman Haftar has launched an offensive to take Tripoli from the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), intensifying the crisis in the country riven by divisions since the NATO-backed overthrow of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Fierce fighting has broken out around a disused former airport about 11 km (7 miles) from the center.

The air force of the eastern-based Libyan army on Friday attacked military camps of the UN-backed government in the capital Tripoli and the western city of Zuwara.

Conte said any potential military intervention could push many Libyans to flee across the Mediterranean towards southern Europe. The turnout was bigger than last Friday.

His forces swept from their eastern stronghold through Libya's sparsely populated desert, taking parts of the south, before beginning their assault on Tripoli.

But Sarraj's government has managed to halt for now the advance, helped by forces with machine-guns on pickups, and steel containers across the road into Tripoli.

The Tripoli government says it has taken almost 200 prisoners from Haftar's forces, according to Reuters.

Haftar's offensive had surprised the United Nations, which had been planning to hold a national conference on April 14 to prepare Libya for elections.

Speaking by phone from Tripoli, WHO's representative in Libya Jaffar Hussain Syed told reporters that the "fighting is closing (in) from the outskirts to inside of Tripoli".

World Health Organization said it has delivered trauma kits and medicines to hospitals, adding: "These supplies will last for two weeks, the acute phase".

Haftar casts himself as a bulwark against Islamist militancy who wants to restore order to Libya.

He has so far resisted United Nations pressure to accept a power-sharing settlement, using his leverage as an ally of the West in attempts to stem extremists in north Africa. "Simply put, this is a matter of life or death", Filippo Grandi said in a statement. At the moment, Libya is mainly used a transit spot for migrants from Sub-Saharan countries.
