U.S. charges Julian Assange with helping Chelsea Manning hack classified information

Newly arrested WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange needs to "answer for what he has done", Hillary Clinton said on Thursday.

Assange hadn't left the embassy since August 2012, fearing that if he stepped off Ecuador's diplomatic soil he would be arrested and extradited to the US for publishing thousands of classified military and diplomatic cables through WikiLeaks.

Channel Teleamazonas identified him as Ola Bini, a software developer focused on privacy, security and cryptography, but did not name its source.

Ecuador's President Lenin Moreno speaks during the inauguration of the "Agua Para Todos" or "Water for Everyone" government program, in Latacunga, Ecuador, Thursday, April 11, 2019.

In a tongue-in-cheek nod to Trump's travel ban on citizens from Muslim-majority nations, Clinton added, "I do think it's a little ironic that he's the only foreigner this administration would welcome to the United States".

"We have sufficient evidence that he was collaborating in attempts to destabilize the government", she said.

Speaking at the UK's Westminster Magistrates court after his arrest, Assange's lawyer stated that the WikiLeaks' founder had a reasonable excuse for breaking United Kingdom bail, but added that Assange will not be presenting evidence for that.

British police moved in after Ecuador pulled its asylum for Assange and cancelled his citizenship, granted in 2012.

Assange was arrested after Ecuador revoked the political asylum that had kept him holed up at the embassy for almost seven years.

But US authorities are seeking his extradition on charges relating to his work with former US intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning in 2010, with the case to be heard on May 2.
