House of horrors: Parents who starved and shackled children sentenced to life

David and Louise Turpin were sentenced on Friday during an emotional hearing that saw some of the children speak publicly about the abuse for the first time.

The parents each spoke before the sentencing.

In response to a question about who was on medication, she says, "oh I don't know what medication is". They nearly changed me, but I realized what was happening. They have the right to address the court to say how they've been impacted by the abuse.

When they were rescused from the house, 12 of the 13 kids were malnourished, sexually abused, and physically abused.

The never-before-heard call was obtained by ABC News America ahead of the Turpin couple's sentencing on Friday, Californian time.

"My parents took my whole life from me", said one of the Turpins' daughters, identified as Jane Doe Number 4.

The lawman said that the victim told him her sisters had been shackled because they were caught by Louise Turpin snatching candy from the kitchen - - verboten under the house "rules". "I'm a fighter and I'm strong".

The "house of horrors" case shocked the country in January 2018 after a 17-year-old girl jumped out a window from the filthy home where she lived in isolation with her parents and 12 siblings.

Most of the children ranging in age from 2 to 29 were severely underweight and hadn't bathed for months.

Some of the others said they still love their parents.

The couple pleaded guilty in February to charges, including torture, adult abuse and child endangerment. Attorney Jack Osborn, who represents them, declined to comment on them Thursday.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton confirmed the woman's death, saying it had followed shots being fired. She added: "Those who brought guns onto our streets in the 70s, 80s and 90s were wrong".

They were given credit for an early admission of guilt that spared their children the pain of testifying against them at trial. "It's up to each one of them".

Responding officers found a scene of malnutrition and squalor at the Turpin residence, with some of the children chained to the furniture.

All of the children, who are aged between two and 29, are believed to have suffered mental impairments from extended malnutrition.

The siblings were isolated from the outside world and were often denied showers, medical care and food, authorities said.

None of them had seen a doctor in more than four years, and none of them had ever visited a dentist. "We decided that the victims have endured enough torture and abuse", District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in announcing the joint plea deals on February 22.

The victims told investigators that being tied with ropes was initially a form of punishment. Their parents watched in tears as the children talked about being chained and beaten.

The girl's only exercise was pacing back and forth in the room she shared with her two younger sisters, according to the deputy.

Turpin professed his love for the youngsters before the sentence was pronounced, while his wife read her own statement, apologizing to her children and adding: "I only want the best for them".

In exchange for their admissions, the Riverside County District Attorney's Office dropped 11 counts of torture, seven counts of false imprisonment and five counts of child abuse against the pair.

The Turpins will be sentenced today in Riverside Superior Court, where they each face life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
