House of Representatives passes bill to restore net neutrality

Net neutrality backers argue that clear rules are needed to prevent dominant internet service providers like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T from blocking or throttling services or websites for competitive reasons.

Democrats have control over the House, so passing the bill wasn't too arduous in that chamber, but they face a tougher task in pushing the legislation through the Senate, over which Republicans hold sway - the party lines drawn in the House vote underscore the hard job ahead for the bill's proponents.

Walters promised that the ACU would "double weigh" votes made by House congressmen on the "Save the Internet" Act in next year's "Ratings of Congress" report.

On a cold winter day in mid-December of 2017, the FCC voted to kill Net Neutrality. Bill Posey (R-Fla.), joined them in support.

Republicans have said the bill would open the door to the FCC imposing rate regulations or adding taxes to internet service similar to levies on cable or phone bills. As the legislation now moves to the Senate for final approval, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed that it is "dead on arrival in the Senate", a stance that aligns with that of the Trump administration.

Cleveland to escape big storm expected to cripple much of United States
The good news with this storm is that it will be so far north that it will not bring a lot of rain to the Midwest. Strong winds and heavy snow with blizzard conditions will develop Wednesday afternoon for the northeast plains.

To that end, opponents of the House bill have slammed it as a political stunt aimed at rallying Democratic voters ahead of the 2020 presidential elections. Still, the effort to restore net neutrality could give Democrats political points on consumer protections. Brian Schatz of Hawaii, a top Democrat on the tech-focused Senate Commerce Committee, said in an interview last week.

Net neutrality is a topic we have covered extensively in the past, including what it means for PC gaming. "And the only way this is going to change is if we get a new FCC".

"I don't know if they'll pass this bill", he said in an interview.

While this is an important step forward if bringing back Net Neutrality, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done in order for it to be restored. "They may differ on how and what it should cover, but they still think we should do it". A federal court heard oral arguments in the case in February. A decision is expected this summer. Net neutrality would ensure that lawful traffic across the internet is treated fairly.
