India marks 100th anniversary of Amritsar Massacre

"We must never forget what happened here".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "We pay homage to the martyrs of the horrific massacre of Jallianwala Bagh".

Amarinder Singh, the chief minister of India's Punjab state where the massacre site is located, said on Friday that May's words were not enough.

On Wednesday, May told the British parliament that "the tragedy of Jallianwala Bagh in 1919 is a shameful scar on British Indian history", but she did not issue a formal apology.

Captain Amarinder also exhorted the prime minister not to exploit the martyrdom of the victims of the violence unleashed by the British during the freedom struggle, or of the soldiers who are dying every day at the borders or in ISI-backed terror attacks such as Pulwama, for furthering his and his party's political ambitions. "I am pleased today that the United Kingdom and India have and remain committed to developing further a thriving 21st century partnership", Asquith wrote on visitor's book at the memorial. "As Her Majesty the Queen (Elizabeth II) said before visiting Jallianwala Bagh in 1997, it is a distressing example of our past history with India", she had said in her statement. "This inhuman act of imperial might remains an indelible bloody stain on the canvas of recent Indian history", Naidu in his tribute said. I am pleased that today the UK-India relationship is one of collaboration, partnership, prosperity and security.

Former British Prime Minister David Cameron described the killings as "deeply shameful" in a visit to the northern Indian city in 2013 but stopped short of an apology.

After striking out three times in his prior at-bats, Báez grounded out to first, standing two runners. "I played good defense". Schwarber, after the call, slammed down his helmet and had to be restrained by Javy Baez from charging the third base umpire.

Condemning the prime minister for trying to mislead the people with this politically motivated falsehoods, Amarinder said it was Modi who had insulted the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh, first by not being present at any of the commemorative events and then by choosing to politicise the occasion.

"I would just ask you to respect what I came here to do, which was to commemorate those who died 100 years ago, to express the sorrow of the British government and of the British people", Asquith said.

"My own great grandfather, who was the prime minister for nearly a decade, had referred to this as one of the worst outrages in our whole history", he said.

Known in India as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, it is still an emotive subject with many demanding a British apology - which so far has been unforthcoming.

Earlier the Punjab chief minister slammed MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on her hypocrisy about commemorating Jallianwala Bagh, saying that her husband's ancestors had organised a lavish dinner to celebrate the massacre.

In March 1919, the British colonial government passed the Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act, or the Rowlatt Act, extending repressive measures in force during World War I (1914-18).
