Internet Explorer causes new exploit - Whether you use it or not

Internet Explorer continues to threaten PC users with 0-day exploit

A critical exploit in Microsoft's Internet Explorer could let hackers steal files from your system.

The hack relies on Internet Explorer's ability to save its web pages in the.MHT file format, something modern browsers don't allow, thus making IE the default application to open such files.

The security researcher further explains that the vulnerability enables hackers to "potentially exfiltrate local files and conduct remote reconnaissance on locally installed Program version information".

A new zero-day exploit has been discovered within the Internet Explorer (IE), Microsoft's archaic and out-of-date web browser for Windows. What's particularly interesting about this security flaw is that you don't even need to be an Internet Explorer user to be vulnerable.

"Upon opening the malicious '.MHT' file locally it should launch Internet Explorer".

For example, when a user saves a webpage, either manually or by typing CRTL and the "S" key, it saves in.MHT format.

'However, a simple call to the window.print () Javascript function should do the trick without requiring any user interaction with the webpage'.

Disney stock soars after release of streaming service
Check out The Cheat Sheet on Facebook! However, some of these films will still be available on Netflix through 2020. Disney also picked up FX Networks and doubled its ownership in Hulu to a controlling 60% stake through the deal.

Mr Page wrote: "Internet Explorer is vulnerable to XML External Entity attack if a user opens a specially crafted.MHT file locally".

But the most concerning part related to this flaw is Microsoft's response.

The exploit has been tested using the last version of Internet Explorer, IE 11. However following stiff competition from Firefox and Google Chrome, the browser went into swift decline, as evidenced by its many security vulnerabilities.

It allowed them to easily takeover your PC by executing some malicious code.

Details of the vulnerability were exposed by security researcher John Page after Microsoft refused to issue a patch.

"Microsoft said a fix would be "considered" in a future release".

For Internet Explorer only needs to exist on their PC, for the vulnerability to exist. Be that as it may, it's clear that this isn't a vulnerability that should be taken lightly.
