Beresheet 2: Netanyahu backs new Israeli lunar mission after 1st smashed into moon

Head of IAI's space division, Head of IAI's space division, Ofer Doron, SpaceIL CEO Dr. Ido Anteby, president of the non-profit organization SpaceIL Morris Kahn, Space IL founder Kfir Damari, SpaceIL founder Yariv Bash, and Aviad Shmaryahu of the Israel Space Agency.

And the work begins immediately.

Why did it take weeks to get to the Moon?

Beresheet was a privately funded mission to repeat what the USA, the former Soviet Union, and China have all achieved: land a craft safely on the surface of the moon. But inspired by the perseverance of SpaceIL, the XPrize Foundation announced it would offer the team $1 million if its landing is stuck by Beresheet.

That landing process took around 20 minutes.

The Beresheet spacecraft, while approaching the moon crashed as its engine had stopped.

After five minutes, Beresheet struck the velocity that was ideal, and the engineers burst into applause, congratulating each other with hugs and handshakes. Unfortunately, Beresheet experienced a glitch while it was descending, and it crashed. As did the silver lining outlooks. It makes Israel the seventh country to orbit the moon, and the first privately funded mission to achieve a lunar orbit.

A girl poses for a photo next to a poster of the SpaceIL spacecraft in Netanya, Israel, Thursday, April 11, 2019. The accident occurred during its descent over Mare Serenitatis, on the northern hemisphere of the moon. That won't happen but the spacecraft is still up there somewhere with the Israeli flag and a digital time capsule loaded with Hebrew songs, stories, Israel's Declaration of Independence and national anthem, among other national symbols. The country would've become the fourth country to land its lander on the surface of the moon.

The spacecraft lost communication with ground control during its final descent. If the entire thing had worked according to the plan, this landing would have been the very first private enterprise to get to the moon with a controlled landing, with a small spacecraft and a small budget.

The Israeli SpaceIL wanted to create a prototype for future commercial moon landings.

Although the Google prize expired in March without a victor having reached the moon, Israel's team pledged to push forward.

And that message has resonated.
