ISRO to launch EMISAT satellite on Monday eyes several firsts

The EMISAT satellite is aimed at electromagnetic measurement.

In the first of its kind, EMISAT, a satellite meant to provide intelligence to the armed forces, was launched from the Sriharikota spaceport by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Monday.

The four-stage PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) was launched at 9.27 a.m. from the second launch pad. It is the first test of the PSLV-QL rocket variant, which has 4 additional strap-on PSOM-XL boosters to give it a huge additional thrust during liftoff. On January 24, the ISRO flew a PSLV with two strap-on motors while in March, it had four strap-on motors, reported IANS.

The rocket has encountered only two failures so far - its maiden developmental flight ended unsuccessful way back in 1993.

At 9.27am, the PSLV rocket standing at 44.5 metres tall and weighing about 239 tonnes with a one-way ticket, hurtled itself towards the skies ferrying the Emisat and 28 global customer satellites - 24 from the United States, two from Lithuania and one each from Spain and Switzerland. "Uniqueness of this mission is, it's going to place satellites in 3 different orbits.I hope it'll be 100% success as usual".

After removing the heat-shield at an altitude of 115 kms, the fourth-stage of rocket (PS4) would first inject EMISAT into an orbit of 749 km.

During this initiative, all the other 28 customer satellites, totally weighing about 220 kgs, would be released by lowering the fourth state to around 504 kms orbit.

The fourth stage would then eventually come down to 485 kms orbit, where it will act as an orbital platform for three other payloads - ISRO's Automatic Identification System which would help in automatic identification of ships by capturing messages from ships and relaying them to ground stations. The mission marks several firsts to the credit of the space agency as it would manoeuvre satellites in various orbits and orbital experiments including on maritime satellite applications.

The student satellite launched by IIST is called the Advanced Retarding Potential Analyzer for Ionospheric Studies (ARIS), and will study the structure and composition of the ionosphere.

Among the satellites in Monday's launch are 20 earth-imaging satellites of Planet Labs Inc, a private satellite operator based in San Francisco.

This comes just days after India achieved a major milestone in its defence capabilities in space by shooting down a low earth orbit satellite using an anti-satellite (ASAT) missile.

In February, ISRO launched India's communication satellite GSAT-31 from the European launch service provider Ariane from French Guiana.
