Joko Widodo likely victor of Indonesian elections but Prabowo won't go easy

The authority is set to declare an official quick count based on samples of votes in the next week, before completing the manual counting of ballots by May 22.

"We just want to bow down to express our gratitude in order that this victory is recognised", he said, referring to Prabowo's claim he won the election.

He also warned of arrests.

Twelve survey institutions have released their well-publicized quick count results and all consistently show that Jokowi and his running mate Ma'ruf Amin are leading with between 54 and 55 percent, while Prabowo and Sandiaga are trailing behind with between 44 and 45 percent.

This year's campaign was punctuated by bitter mudslinging and a slew of fake news online - much of it directed at the presidential contenders. The country's top security minister and its military and police chiefs said Thursday that they will crack down decisively on any attempts to disrupt public order while official results from presidential and legislative elections are tabulated.

Election workers dressed in superhero costumes register voters at a polling station on Wednesday.

The election was a huge logistical exercise with 193 million people eligible to vote, more than 800,000 polling stations and 17 million people involved in ensuring the polls ran smoothly. A second term for Widodo, the first Indonesian president from outside the Jakarta elite, could further cement the country's two decades of democratisation.

"We urge people not to be caught up in euphoria based on the quick count results", he told reporters.

Iran says its armed forces are not a regional threat
Torrential rainfall since March 19 in the Islamic republic of Iran has killed at least 76 people. The Iranian leader said the USA decision to designate the IRGC as terrorist is an insult.

Preliminary results from Wednesday's election show President Joko Widodo has comfortably won a second term, but his challenger, ultra-nationalist former general Prabowo Subianto, has claimed victory, repeating his tactics following his 2014 loss to Widodo. "I'm the president of all Indonesians".

A spokesman for Prabowo said he would take his complaint to the Constitutional Court if the Election Commission confirmed Widodo's victory.

Online, Subianto was pilloried by social media users who poked fun at his repudiation of the unofficial results and for kissing the ground as he declared himself president. "I have sent a representative to meet with him so that we can communicate", Jokowi said.

The president had appealed to people on Wednesday to wait until the General Elections Commission announced the result.

National newspapers called for reconciliation, with top-selling Kompas saying "Let's Unite", while Tempo declared it "One More Time" for Widodo.

Financial markets rose before trimming gains with the rupiah currency up 0.3% from the previous close and the Jakarta stock index up 0.6% by midday.

"We do not think that beyond a short-term boost to sentiment, Jokowi's re-election alters Indonesia's economic fortunes materially", Kishore said.
