Kirstjen Nielsen Speaks Out After Resignation

US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who oversaw President Donald Trump's bitterly contested immigration policies during her tumultuous 16-month tenure, has resigned amid a surge in the number of migrants at the border with Mexico.

Thousands of young children were taken from their parents and held in separation facilities.

"Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her service", Trump tweeted Sunday.

Kevin McAleenan, presently commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, will be the fourth person to helm the agency under Trump.

She gave no reason for her departure in her resignation letter, although she said this was the right time for her to step aside and that the U.S. is a safer place today than when she joined the administration.

The resignation, which was confirmed during a tense meeting at the white house on Sunday, comes after days of speculation that the relationship between the president and the secretary had broken down.

Mr Trump has recently threatened to shut the crossing, but has since backtracked and promised to give Mexico a year to stop illegal drugs and migrants crossing into the US. On Thursday, the USA president unexpectedly withdrew his nomination for the head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), citing an aim to pursue a "tougher stance".

The US Open Final: Who Will Make it?
The 34-year-old Swiss won the first two sets 6-4 and 7-5, forcing an injured and struggling Djokovic to retire in the third. If she’s at her best, then she’ll make it to the final and if she performs on the day the title will be hers.

"When even the most radical voices in the administration aren't radical enough for President Trump, you know he's completely lost touch with the American people", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Nielsen was "frustrated" by what President Donald Trump has wanted to be done, as "he's asking for the department to do things that violate the law", said Coons. "America needs a Homeland Security Secretary who will respect the sanctity of families, honor our proud heritage as a nation of immigrants, and restore sanity to this Administration's policies".

For many, Nielsen has been the public face of Trump's shameful immigration policies, including those created to separate children from their families at the southern border.

He said in a statement, however, that she should not serve as a scapegoat, blasting Trump for "terrible and cruel policies". She was long expected to be fired as Mr. Trump's dissatisfaction grew over an increase of migrants illegally entering the United States at the southwestern border. But despite reports he complained constantly about her performance - and that he believed she was not harsh enough - she remained steadfastly loyal.

On February 15, Trump signed a declaration to impose the state of emergency in the region of the country's southern border, which allowed him to access additional funds for the Mexico border wall project. I think that's not what she'll be known for.

"Whoever is put in that position in this administration is going to have a very hard time resisting the philosophy of the White House", Legomsky said.
