The Arab American Institute (AII) said that Barghouti was barred from boarding a Wednesday flight to NY for a multi-city speaking tour in the United States, despite having a valid travel document and visa.

In a Thursday statement, Barghouti said that the United States entry ban was "ideologically and politically motivated", and that it was part of "Israel's escalating repression against Palestinian, Israeli and global human rights defenders in the BDS movement for freedom, justice and equality".
