The man had lit his jacket on fire before the Secret Service intervened, according to multiple reports.

The man is said to have lit his jacket on fire after arriving on a scooter Friday.

A person can get in trouble for doing that.

Citing unnamed law enforcement sources, NBC News reported that the man had mental health issues. An official said the fire was extinguished and the man was given first aid.

A man has apparently attempted to set himself on fire outside the White House. CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller tweeted an image of the suspect being carried away from the scene.

The agency said it closed the area down to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Jeremy Diamond of CNN wrote on Twitter: "Secret service spokeswoman tells me a man set his jacket on fire in front of the White House". Officers arrested him and secured a perimeter around the White House. The U.S. Secret Service and D.C. Fire and EMS went to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
