Microsoft's new 50-person group video chat feature for Skype exits beta

Your Skype calls are about to get a lot bigger. Skype

Today's update cements Skype as the clear group video chat victor - at least in terms of the raw number of people you can have in a single call - since FaceTime only supports up to 32 participants. This is being implemented through groups formed on the app, and groups with up to 50 participants now support both video and audio calls.

The doubling of the number of people supported by group calls to 50 puts Skype ahead of most mainstream chat services, including the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

Microsoft acknowledges that increasing the number of chat participants could make things a little tricky and potentially irritating, so the company has made changes to the way notifications work.

The ceremony marks the beginning of a week of events to honour the dead and the start of one hundred days of mourning. As many as 800,000 people were killed, with 10,000 murdered on a daily basis during the period.

Notifications instead of ringing - For group video calls, notifications will be sent instead of using the more intrusive ringing tone.

We posted two weeks ago that Skype was testing a new video call participants limit with Insiders. However, Skype will still let a call organizer ring everyone if there's fewer than 25 people in the group.

If you feel some family members or co-workers are likely to miss the notification, then you can choose individual members to ring. For calls with less than 25 people you can still ring the entire group like before.
