MPs vote on alternative Brexit options

Britain’s Theresa May despite a no confidence vote on Brexit is still determined to go through

The Prime Minister will now consider whether to call a general election because Remainers MPs are now free to try to force through a softer Brexit or a second referendum.

MPs will indicate which of the options they would be willing to support in a series of indicative votes.

Labour MPs are being urged to back a plan to keep the United Kingdom in a Norway-style relationship with the EU.

The indicative votes are not binding on the government and Theresa May has spelt that out.

The party will also support the motion calling for a confirmatory referendum on any deal agreed by Parliament - although some rebels may vote against it.

Under the reworked motion, if the United Kingdom gets to April 10, the date of a European Council summit, without a deal, an extension to Article 50 will be sought. "She has got over half the parliamentary party, the vast majority of our volunteers and members in the country and our supporters supporting a managed no-deal Brexit on April 12 which would end the uncertainty for business and get us out of the European Union".

How will the rest of the day unfold?

The MP continued: "I don't know if Labour are going to whip for it yet, but I have been proactively approached by many Labour MPs who didn't vote for it last time who want to support it this time round".

It was approved by 322 votes to 277.

This can be seen as a much softer Brexit than hardline Brexiters would be satisfied with, but would solve the need for many checks at the Irish border.

The motion for United Kingdom membership of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and European Economic Area (EEA) would allow continued participation in the single market and a "comprehensive customs arrangement" with the EU.

The House will be suspended for 30 minutes to allow the votes to take place.

Will any of the options get a majority?

It proposes United Kingdom membership of the European Free Trade Association (Efta) and European Economic Area (EEA), allowing continued participation in the single market and a "comprehensive customs arrangement" with the EU after Brexit.

None of the eight alternatives to Prime Minister Theresa May's plan considered last week won a majority.

Tonight we will continue to abstain on the customs union proposal because it simply doesn't go far enough.

Mr Fox said that if the United Kingdom pursued it, the country would have to follow rules set by the European Union, adding: "It's time we went back to a proper Brexit".

What are the most popular Brexit options?

He added: "I see my duty as trying to advance matters, whatever people think about this issue, whatever side of the argument they sit, they feel 'Can we not make some progress?'"

She confirmed the Government would not be supporting any of the motions under consideration. This option, tabled last time by Labour former minister Dame Margaret Beckett, polled the highest number of votes although was defeated by 295 votes to 268.
