Romney also said Friday he was "appalled" that, according to special counsel Robert Mueller's findings, Americans working on Trump's 2016 presidential campaign welcomed election help from Russian Federation.

While Mueller found no criminal evidence that Trump or his campaign aides colluded in Russian election meddling and did not recommend obstruction charges against the president, the 448-page report released Thursday nonetheless paints a damaging picture of the president, describing numerous cases where he discouraged witnesses from co-operating with prosecutors and prodded aides to mislead the public on his behalf to hamper the Russia probe he feared would cripple his presidency.

The tome runs to more than 400 pages.

The two-volume, 448-page report recounts how Mr Trump repeatedly sought to take control of the Russian Federation probe.

Mueller reported that Mr Trump had been agitated at the special counsel probe from its earliest days, reacting to Mueller's appointment by saying it was the "end of his presidency".

The episodes of potential wrongdoing, which will now be examined by the Democrat-led House of Representatives, include the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey, Trump's efforts to remove Mueller and his attempts to prevent disclosure of emails about the infamous 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Russians and senior campaign officials.

The Mueller report detailed Manafort's work in the Ukraine on behalf of Russian interests.

"Statements are made about me by certain people in the Crazy Mueller Report, in itself written by 18 Angry Democrat Trump Haters, which are fabricated & totally untrue", Trump wrote, adding that some were "total bullshit & only given to make the other person look good (or me to look bad)".

The President's son, Donald Jr., set up a meeting with purported Kremlin intermediaries at Trump Tower in June, 2016, in hopes of receiving compromising information on Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

In saying that there was no conspiracy between Trump, his 2016 campaign and Russian hackers, Barr and Mueller applied a strict interpretation of United States law.

Mueller also said there was not sufficient evidence to charge any campaign officials with working as an unregistered foreign agent of Russian Federation.

"The investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities". "Oh my God. This is bad". This is awful. This is the end of my presidency. "If I were the president, I would have basically declared victory with the Mueller report and everything that came out and move beyond it". Mr Trump has once again rubbished the Mueller inquiry. Mr McGahn did not carry out the order. Mr. Trump later asked Mr. McGahn to publicly deny that Mr. Trump had asked him to fire Mr. Mueller; Mr. McGahn refused this, too.

Also on Friday, the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's North America Department, Georgy Borisenko said when asked comments on Mueller's report that "the report confirms the absence of any arguments to the effect Russia allegedly intervened in the US election". But Mueller documents repeated attempts by Trump to get Sessions to "unrecuse", for which he would be a "hero".

Mr Nadler issued the subpoena for the full, unredacted version on Friday, giving the US Attorney General until 1 May to respond. He also does not reach a conclusion on obstruction of justice, although he discloses ten episodes of possible obstruction by the president.

The report details the president's interactions with his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, who is facing three years in prison for financial crimes, campaign finance violations and lying to Congress. For another, he believes it is up to Congress to decide how to handle potential presidential wrongdoing.

Mueller, in his report, does not find that the president or his campaign coordinated with Russian Federation.

"Accordingly, while this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him".
