Mueller report: Things we only just learned

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's redacted report as released on Thursday

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's redacted report as released on Thursday

In June 2016, three top Trump campaign officials - the president's son, Donald Trump Jr.; son-in-law, Jared Kushner; and then-campaign chair Paul Manafort - met privately at the Trump Tower with a group of Russians who were promising "information that would incriminate Hillary [Clinton]".

US Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report details Australia's role in sparking the FBI's 2016 investigation into whether Donald Trump's election campaign co-ordinated with the Russian government. It also remains unclear how the hacked emails were transferred to WikiLeaks by the Russians. But before turning to that battlefield, I wanted to point out how ridiculously and maliciously off-base some in the Trump-hating crowd were with regard to Barr's summary.

According to the Mueller report, when then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions told the president about the coming inquiry, he replied: "Oh my god".

Ultimately, Mueller determined the various contacts either didn't amount to criminal behavior or would be hard to prove in court, even if people in Trump's orbit sometimes displayed a willingness to accept Russian help, the report showed.

The 448-page report, with redactions, which was released by Attorney General William Barr on Thursday morning, details the almost two-year investigation, which resulted in 199 criminal charges and 34 individuals and organizations facing indictments or pleading guilty - including six former Trump associates and three groups linked to the Russian government.

With their newly acquired majority in the House of Representatives, Democrats now have the power to launch investigations, summon witnesses and subpoena documents.

Biding their time, Democrats are putting the focus on their next investigative steps.

First of all, no one should be writing off impeachment.

Mueller also concluded that former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey was reliable when he recounted that Trump cornered him into a one-on-one White House meeting and pressured him to stop investigating former national security adviser Michael Flynn, although Trump has denied much of Comey's story. Compare it to the conclusions in the Mueller report.

And for all the questions, doubts, contradictions, sleights of hand, Mr Trump emerges with two key headlines: Mueller says there was no collusion; the attorney-general says there was no obstruction of justice.

But it's not up to a jury, since the Justice Department, per its longstanding policy, was never going to prosecute a sitting president.

Not for the first time, #ImpeachTrump is now trending on Twitter, with prominent political figures and ordinary citizens utilizing the hashtag to convey their belief that the president deserves to be removed from office over the findings in Mueller's report. It's up to Congress, which in deciding whether a president has committed "high crimes and misdemeanors" is unconstrained by statute or by the standard of proof that applies in a criminal trial. The special counsel's office looked to whether members of the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian election interference.

Most leading congressional Democrats were hedging their bets on impeachment however, citing the likelihood that the Republican-controlled Senate would refuse to convict Trump and remove him from office. Simes emigrated to the United States in 1973.

Republicans sought to portray Democrats as unwilling to let go of the idea that Trump colluded with Russian Federation to swing the election.

Other Republicans were more measured.

Mueller's 22-month investigation found there was insufficient evidence to establish Trump or his associates engaged in a criminal conspiracy with Russian Federation to disrupt the 2016 election.

Smith argued that Barr has twisted the Mueller report, even saying President Trump cooperated with the investigation despite the report itself indicating that the president did no such thing.

Republican Congressmember Cathy McMorris Rodgers did not make any definitive statement on the report, other than to say she is glad that it has been released.

But, while the investigation exonerated the USA president of any collusion with Moscow, his critics keep on insisting that Trump could still have been complicit in obstructing the investigation. "However, we are unable to reach that judgment". During a Thursday press conference, Green, who has previously pushed for Trump's removal from office, said that Muller's findings have "given us ample evidence to move forward with impeachment".

Mueller's team hewed to department guidelines.

For Democrats, those pages amount to a green light to finish what Mueller started.

"We have a very serious situation on our hands", he said.

Conway's op-ed comes after progressive Democrat Reps. The investigations may provide a steady stream of revelations that damage the president while also firing up his supporters to his defense as he gears up for re-election. The probe underscored just how far Trump has gone in pushing the limits of the presidency and encouraging others to help him do so.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted Thursday that she takes "no pleasure in discussions of impeachment".
