Coverage of mass shootings netted Pulitzers for two other local newspapers.

Three Pulitzers were awarded to coverage of gun control issues, including a public service award to the South Florida Sun Sentinel for its coverage of the mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland in February previous year, when 17 students and staff were killed. Seventeen students and staff members died in that attack. That attack killed 11 people.

The Capital Gazette was given a special citation for its coverage and courage in the face of a massacre in its own newsroom. The newspaper published on schedule the day after the shooting claimed five staffers' lives.

In the US, journalists have been contending with attacks on the media's integrity from the president on down. The man charged had a longstanding grudge against the paper.

The late iconic musician was honored with the Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for her contribution to American music and culture.

Monday's wins by the Times and The Wall Street Journal and freelance cartoonist Darrin Bell may further anger the president.

The Wall Street Journal won the national reporting prize for uncovering the president's secret payoffs to two alleged former mistresses during his campaign.

The Times won the prestigious journalism award for explanatory reporting for its probe of the Trump family's finances that "debunked his claims of self-made wealth and revealed a business empire riddled with tax dodges", the Pulitzer Prize Board announced during a ceremony at New York's Columbia University. Trump has denied having affairs with them.

Trump has previously taken issue with the Pulitzer Prizes that were handed out in 2018 to stories that examined his campaign's ties to Russian Federation, claiming that Robert Mueller's "no collusion" findings meant that the reporters should return their honors.

Aretha Franklin performs at the world premiere of "Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives" during the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.

"She's continued to receive multiple awards - she's received nearly every award imaginable and now to get the Pulitzer Prize, it's just wonderful", Ms Owens said in an interview with The Associated Press.

When Ms Owens heard the news that Franklin won a Pulitzer, she and the family were "surprised but in another way we were not because that's just the kind of person Aretha was".

For literature, Richard Powers' novel The Overstory won the fiction prize, while David Blight's biography of Frederick Douglass won for the best work of history.

Novelist Richard Powers won the Pulitzer for fiction for "The Overstory", a panoramic look at nine Americans whose lives become entwined due to their experiences with trees, and David W. Blight picked up the prize in history for his acclaimed biography "Frederick Douglas". Eliza Griswold's "Amity and Prosperity: One Family and the Fracturing of America" won for general nonfiction, and Ellen Reid's opera "p r i s m" for music.
