Russian diplomat slams Assange’s prosecution as US political elite’s revenge

WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange was arrested at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London on Thursday, April 11.

The Australian was arrested "on a warrant issued by Westminster Magistrates' Court on 29 June 2012, for failing to surrender to the court", before being "further arrested on behalf of the United States authorities, at 10:53hrs after his arrival at a central London police station".

Assange first sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in 2012, when he skipped bail after an extradition order to Sweden, where someone had accused him of sexual assault. However, the US Department of Justice claims that he faces just five years behind bars on hacking charges. He feared that if he was taken to Sweden, he would be handed to the USA authorities.

The Swedish prosecutor is now under pressure to reopen the sexual assault case against Assange which it was forced to drop in 2017. The allegations by two women have not been tested in court and Assange has denied wrongdoing. Abbott said the USA case against Assange is about the "embarrassment of the things he's revealed about the American military and security services". But Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the expected battle over Assange's possible extradition would not involve Australia.

District Judge Michael Snow described his behaviour as "that of a narcissist who can not get beyond his own selfish interests".

Police responded and appeared at the house minutes later with a full dog squad, reporting "rustling" coming from the bathroom . Danny DiPietro says this encounter was his first " Roomba burglar " in 13 years on the job. "Never had anything like this".

France's government says it won't consider offering Julian Assange political asylum unless he asks for it. He said Assange has a small child in France.

"We have sufficient evidence that he was collaborating in attempts to destabilize the government", she said. The Wikileaks founder continued his operation with little interruption throughout his stay there until Correa's vice president, Lenin Moreno, took power in 2017 shortly after the 2016 US presidential election, during which Wikileaks published damaging emails from the DNC showing that the organization colluded with the media to rig the primary election against Bernie Sanders to secure Hillary Clinton's presidential nomination. Assange was arrested Thursday at the Ecuadorean embassy in London.

She also told the BBC that May should block Assange's extradition to the United States after the prime minsiter previously intervened in the case of computer hacker Gary McKinnon.

Abbott says the US case against Assange is about the "embarrassment of the things he's revealed about the American military and security services".
