As many as 100 vehicles offered through the Car2Go rental app were stolen across Chicago and police have arrested at least 16 people in relation to the thefts. The service remains operational outside of Chicago.

The Chicago Police Department said they have been notified about the "deceptive or fraudulent means" that had been used to acquire the vehicles.

Cops are now investigating how the fraudsters managed to manipulate the app so they could steal the luxe rides, which included a slew of Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

His tweet also said numerous crimes had been used to commit crimes and that over 12 people were in custody. It stressed that its app "wasn't hacked" and that that the perpetrators hadn't obtained sensitive member data. This is an instance of fraud, isolated to Chicago, and we are now working with law enforcement.

But Car2go is denying its system was hacked nor was users' information compromised.

Car2go's global fleet in January totaled almost 14,000 vehicles in 25 locations in North America, Europe and Asia.

A spokesperson for car2go said, "Out of an abundance of caution and safety for our members we are temporarily pausing our Chicago service".

In a statement, the Chicago Police Department said most of the vehicles had been recovered in Chicago's West Side. Law enforcement is not sure at the present stage whether there are other vehicles involved in the fraud which are unaccounted for. He declined to comment on details of the incident due to there being an ongoing police investigation.
