PNG to connect via Australia-China internet cable

The logo of Huawei is seen at its showroom in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China March 29, 2019. It will also include a connection to Madang in Papua New Guinea and possible branches to Port Moresby and to Honiara in the Solomon Islands, connections Huawei had agreed to make before Australia blocked its project there previous year on the grounds of security concerns.

Building on our reports from previous year that Australia had blocked Huawei from building a 4,000km cable between Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, US company TE Subcom has reportedly won the deal to build the link.

Choosing a very direct route means the cable will provide the best latency from Australia across the Pacific Ocean, according to the companies.

"The opportunity to create a partnership with H2 and expand our experience in Australia is of great importance to us", said Mike Rieger, vice president of global sales and marketing at SubCom. The development of the society by the observable increment of access to the accessibility of the internet in PNG.

On the Sydney to Hong Kong leg, H2 will have a capacity of 15 tbps per fibre pair with an onwards connection to China.

Huawei, which won a tender to build a domestic cable network in Papua New Guinea in 2016 and also uses Madang as a hub, was shut out of building an worldwide cable to Australia amid concern over the company's links to China's government.

Australia's connectivity with Asia looks set to receive a multi-terabit per second shot in the arm as the Singapore-based H2 Cable company signed up Subcom to supply and install a data circuit spanning Sydney to Hong Kong, and onwards to the United States.

"All options for meshing the Pacific Islands are good for the development of the economies of these countries", Keir Preedy, chief executive of the Solomon Island Submarine Cable Company, told Reuters.
