Police can now see if you’re on your phone while driving

Police have unveiled an all-new device which is able to detect when a driver is using their mobile phone while behind the wheel of their auto.

According to MoreBikes, Thames Valley and Hampshire police are working with the traffic signage manufacturers Westcotec to build a device that is installed roadside to monitor both mobile phone signals and passing traffic. A sign will flash, telling drivers they have been seen and to stop using their mobile phone.

While the tech cannot bring charges forward against a driver as it can't identify if it's them using a phone or indeed a passenger, it aims to help warn drivers against the use of a phone behind the wheel.

Kate Goldsmith has been campaigning over the use of mobile phones by drivers: "I am supporting this campaign and welcome any technology which can assist in educating people and stop them from using their mobile phones whilst driving".

"My daughter's death was completely avoidable".

Hampshire Constabulary is about to crack down still further on those motorists who persist on using mobile phones at the wheel. The county has seen 40 incidents involving mobile phones where people have been killed or seriously injured.

She said the detectors were "not a flawless solution" to convict offenders but were "a step in the direction".

The 11-year-old was killed along with her stepbrothers Josh Houghton, aged 11, Ethan Houghton, aged 13, and the brothers' mother Tracey Houghton, aged 45.

The system, which can not record footage, was initially tested in Norfolk past year.

The system, developed by Westcotec, comprises a sensor capable of detecting vehicles where there are active 2G, 3G and 4G phone signals, and an LED warning sign located a short distance along the road.

This could trigger more fines or heftier punishments being handed out to motorists.

The designers have also cleverly figured out how to determine if the device is in hands-free Bluetooth mode, and will not send a message if that's the case (which raises the question, just how much are they digging into our phones, hrm?).

Research shows that you are four times more likely to be involved in a crash if you use your phone while driving.

Additionally officers will be stopping motorists caught using their mobile phone at locations throughout Hampshire and the Thames Valley.

Pete Williams, RAC road safety spokesperson, said: "Driving and using a handheld phone do not mix, it is an incredibly unsafe and distracting combination".

Tougher penalties for using a mobile phone behind the wheel were introduced in March 2017, which saw the fine double to six points and a £200 fine.

Most no-trespass orders are in six-month or one-year increments. "We think this is a very isolated event", Potts said. Potts said Bloomington police had not had any contact with the suspect since 2015, until Friday's incident.
