Bandmates Liam Howlett, Maxim and Leeroy Thornhill were met by cheers when they arrived at the service.

The procession will finish at St Mary's Church at 15:30, where a service will be held for family and close friends.

Although the private church service is for family members and close friends only, the public will be able to hear the proceedings as speakers have been installed outside the venue.

A tweet from the band's official Twitter page said: "Fans are invited to line the procession route, starting at 3pm in Braintree, Essex on Friday 29th March, to pay their final respects & 'raise the roof" for Keef!' Days Like This by Van Morrison, Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here and That's Entertainment by The Jam also being played.

Fans flew in from as far as Australia to mark the occasion.

Among those outside the church was Maria Lelicova, 25, who had flown from Prague for "the last time to have a connection, say goodbye".

"I never had so strong connection with other bands as with the Prodigy", she added.

The Guardian spoke to 36-year-old Araks Azarian, who flew to Essex from Australia for the service, and will be flying back tomorrow night for work on Monday morning.

"Since that time I followed the guys on nearly every tour, festivals and everywhere they played in Germany".

Carpenter Lewis Knowles, 31, came from Calne in Wiltshire and said: "They were a big part of growing up, listening to The Prodigy, enjoying it, travelling all round Europe and the world watching them".

The singer rose to fame in the Brit award-winning electronic band in the 1990s and was known for hits including Firestarter and Breathe.

An inquest heard earlier this month that the star died by hanging.

Bandmate Liam Howlett wrote on the band's Instagram page: 'The news is true, I can't believe I'm saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend.

The Prodigy's latest album No Tourists was released November 2018 and the group were set to tour the album this year, including a headline slot at Snowbombing in Austria in April.

Following his death, the Prodigy cancelled all shows "with immediate effect".
