As a part of their World Cup preparation, Afghanistan will travel to Scotland and Ireland to play two ODIs each against them in May. Under his reign, Afghanistan became one of the most exciting teams in the world and also earned their Test status.

The move comes just a month before the ICC World Cup 2019 gets underway in England and Wales with the squad for the tournament to be announced over the course of April. Rahmat Shah will be in charge of the Test side, with Rashid Khan taking the Twenty20 global reins. In what could be called an ill-timed decision, they chose to end Asghar's four-year stint as captain of the Afghanistan team across the three formats.

However, the decision has not gone down well with Rashid as he took to Twitter to express his displeasure.

"With all the respect to the Selection Committee, I strongly disagree with the decision as it is irresponsible & bias", he tweeted. As we have @cricketworldcup in front of us, Captain #MAsgharAfghan should remain as our team Captain. On the appointment of Naib, ACB's chief selector Dawalt Ahmadzai said: "Asghar Afghan, who captained team Afghanistan for a period of around four years, achieved a lot and made the country proud, and I hope Gulbadin Naib will be able to continue his legacy at the helm of the team's affairs".

Meanwhile, Rashid posted two tweets and said that this decision will affect the team's morale before the World Cup.

The 31-year-old Asghar had replaced Nabi as captain in 2015.

"The team has gelled really well under Asghar and I personally feel he is the right man to lead us". He recently led Afghanistan to their first Test win, against Ireland. @ashrafghani @afgexecutive @hmohib " With all the respect to the Selection Committee, I strongly disagree with the decision as it is irresponsible & bias. They will also lock horns with Pakistan and England in one-off ODIs before beginning their World Cup campaign against Australia on 1 June.
