The Boston Red Sox signed shortstop Xander Bogaerts to a six-year contract extension that spans the 2020-2025 seasons, with a vesting option for 2026, the team announced Monday.

"The fans, this organization in general, expect winning", Bogaerts said. "They know that about me".

The deal, which was first reported Sunday as being close by Boston radio station WEEI, includes the $12 million the 26-year-old Bogaerts was scheduled to make this season, then $120 million over the final six years. He has already won two World Series rings, both with the organization that took a flier on what he described as a "16-year-old kid with no facial hair" in Aruba 10 years ago. "It's a real family", he said prior to the series opener at Oakland.

Bogaerts - who was originally expected to be a free agent after the season - joins a star-studded list of players to recently receive extensions. That might seem insane now, but the other top candidates- Garciaparra (nine years), Rico Petrocelli (six of 13 seasons at shortstop), Rick Burleson (seven years) and Joe Cronin (seven of 11 at shortstop)- didn't make it a full decade manning the position.

Prosecutors haven't filed a formal charge against Ferris or Hicks, and the men are scheduled for a May 13 arraignment. Ferris said he had been wearing the vest when he asked Hicks to shoot him with a.22-caliber semi-automatic rifle.

In a conversation with Jason Mastrodonato of The Boston Herald, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski said the team will not negotiate deals during the 2019 season.

"Absolutely thrilled to have Bogey sign with us for an extended period", Dombrowksi said. Bogaerts batted.288 last season with a.360 on-base percentage and a.883 OPS while hitting 23 homers and collecting 103 RBIs. It is a seven-year, $132 million deal that would begin this season and has an opt-out, according to ESPN.

With his teammates crammed in back of the A's interview room, Bogaerts looked at them all with appreciation as he acknowledged how grateful he is to everybody in his large support system. "... It's very special to be here".
