Research finds Israel has world's healthiest diet

Poor diet causes one in seven deaths in Britain, Lancet finds

The analysis, part of The Global Burden of Disease Study, saw researchers assess the diets of people in 195 countries using data from surveys, sales, and household expenditure from 1990 to 2017.

Lack of those foods is a more significant predictor of diet-related illness and death than over-consumption of sugar and red meat, which gets most of the dietary attention. Of these, 3 million were caused by high salt intake, 3 million were due to low intake of whole grains, and 2 million resulted from eating too few fruits. "The next biggest diet-related killers were cancer, with 913,000 deaths, and Type 2 diabetes, which claimed 339,000 lives..."

We all know that what we eat can affect our health, energy levels and mood.

The findings underscore "the need for comprehensive interventions to promote the production, distribution and consumption of healthy foods across all nations", Murray said.

The report noted that in some poorer countries, the elements of a healthy diet are too expensive for many people to access, and urged policy changes to improve that access.

It found that, in total, one in five deaths worldwide are linked to people having diets that are high in sugar, salt and processed meat. A recent study published in the journal PLOS One by researchers at the University of Guelph found that there would not be enough fruit and vegetables to go around.

"While historically the conversation around diet and nutrition has been focused on a high intake of unhealthy foods, mainly salt, sugar and fats and reducing their consumption, our study shows that in many countries, the main problem is low intake of healthy foods", Afshin said.

A firestorm over the report has continued since then, with Democrats demanding the report be released in full. Russia's government has denied interfering in the USA election.

U.S. co-author Professor Walter Willett, from Harvard University, said the findings supported recent research on heart and artery disease that advocated replacing meat with plant protein.

Researchers wanted to see if there was a connection between diet and chronic disease.

The authors note several important limitations to the study.

"Adoption of diets emphasising soy foods, beans and other healthy plant sources of protein will have important benefits for both human and planetary health", he said. Low intake of whole grains - below 125 grammes per day - was the leading dietary risk factor for death and disease in India, the US, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria, Russia, Egypt, Germany, Iran, and Turkey.

"We call on governments to implement evidence-informed policies that encourage people to make healthier choices by making the healthy option easiest".

Based on the study, the world needs more nourishment instead of just any food on the table.
