Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris after much of it was burned on MOnday

Investigators believe an electrical short circuit was the most likely cause of the Notre-Dame fire, it has been revealed.

While the cause of the fire has now been identified, the official added the "green light" is yet to be given for work to begin on the Cathedral for safety reasons.

Some 50 investigators are actively working the case and are expected to interview workers from five companies hired for the renovations to the cathedral's roof, where the flames first broke out.

Authorities have said Notre Dame, which dates from the 12th century, was in danger of totally going up in flames before fire crews stopped it from spreading into a tower belfry.

The cardinal's words came in response to a question by reporters whether the Vatican will provide support for the reconstruction of the cathedral, which was devastated by a nine-hour fire Monday evening.

Remarkably, no one was killed in the fire, which occurred during a Mass, after firefighters and church officials speedily evacuated those inside.

Macron wants to rebuild the cathedral within five years - in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics that Paris is hosting - but experts say the vast scale of the work to be done could easily take 15 years, since it will take months, even years, just to figure out what should be done. Since then, donations have been pouring in all over the world.

Bells at all of the churches and cathedrals across France rang out in unison on Wednesday night in honor of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Since the cathedral will be closed to the public for years, the rector of the Catholic parish that worships there has proposed building a temporary structure on the plaza in front of the gothic-era landmark, and City Hall gave its approval Thursday "subject to technical restraints".

France is paying tribute Thursday to the hundreds of firefighters who saved the world-renowned Notre Dame Cathedral from utter collapse. Firefighters walked on what the remains of the roof to inspect damage.

The island housing Notre Dame at the heart of the French capital remained largely empty and closed to everyone but residents. Businesses were shuttered and the usual tourist throngs were nowhere to be seen.

Passersby praised the French firefighters who helped save the overall structure of the cathedral. The famed 18-century organ as well as many priceless artwork, artifacts and relics were also spared or rescued.

Earlier Thursday, Macron held a ceremony at the Elysee Palace to thank the hundreds of firefighters who battled the fast-moving fire at Notre Dame for nine hours starting Monday evening, preventing the structure's destruction and rescuing numerous important relics held inside. Top government ministers will also take part in the event at the presidential palace in Paris.
