The 59-year-old, who is out of contract at Newcastle this summer, says he is "waiting for an answer" on a new deal.

Asked how long he planned to carry on, Benitez said: "Yesterday I was talking with a friend - 11 years".

Three wins from their last four matches has given Southampton a massive boost towards Premier League survival while Newcastle are also on course for safety after securing a 1-0 win over Leicester City last Friday. Benitez presented Charnley, and by extension owner Mike Ashley, with his blueprint for the Magpies' future path, a plan which includes improvements to the club's training base and greater autonomy over recruitment, three weeks ago.

"I like to - and I want to - compete for trophies", Benitez said.

Benitez has enjoyed a distinguished career with plenty of highs, guiding Valencia to a pair of La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup, Liverpool to the Champions League and FA Cup, as well as silverware with Chelsea, Inter Milan and Napoli.
