Sterling says wouldn't walk off the pitch in face of racist chants

Numerous examples of abuse have stained European football over recent weeks, with Montenegro facing a UEFA charge of racist behaviour after Sterling and some of his global team-mates were targeted by supporters during England's 5-1 Euro 2020 qualifying win last month.

"I don't think I'm trying to make a difference, or making a difference".

The 24 year old will face his worldwide teammate Danny Rose in Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur.

Rose was speaking after he was allegedly subjected to taunts during England's Euro 2020 qualifying win over Montenegro in March.

Deeney said: "Due to events from the last 24 hours I will be taking comments off my posts".

"When I feel something is not right, I want to speak about it and I feel that is the best way forward". I think that's the best way forward. "If more players do speak up, the better it will be". "But I'm not trying to be a leader of that".

Sterling added: "Growing up, my mum always told me I'm a wonderful black child and I know this".

Asked about his role in the fight against racism, Sterling said: "I don't really think I can make a difference".

"When I hear it, it's nothing new to me".

Wernick's lawyer said the clerk never relayed that conversation to Trudeau because everyone went on holiday the next day. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks during a news conference in Ottawa, Ontario, Tuesday, April 2, 2019.

His Labour colleague Marsha de Cordova (Battersea) agreed, condemning the fact "black British sportsmen (were) having to undergo racial abuse while they are playing for their country, England, proudly". "Obviously I sympathise with him; we all support him", Townsend told reporters after Palace beat Newcastle United 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

"At the same time, it's not right". "My mum has taught me how to love myself, how to love my skin colour and how to be comfortable in my skin colour".

Raheem Sterling and Danny Rose have been praised by MPs for their "courage and dignity" in speaking out over racism in football and proving it "will not defeat our sportsmen and women".

England global Rose said last week that he could not wait to leave football because he had had enough of the racism in the game and was frustrated by the response of the authorities to the abuse.

There have been calls for players to walk off the pitch if they are abused, but Sterling said he felt that would be the wrong move. Instead, he considers the satisfaction of scoring and winning to further anger tormentors, as he did in Montenegro, is a preferable outcome.

The Professional Footballers' Association branded the incidents over the weekend "another stark reminder of how crucial anti-racism and equality development work is across football and society".

"It's something he's come across quite a number of times and it's probably getting too much for him".

When the possibility of walk-offs from victims of racism was raised, Sterling explained that he "would not personally agree with it", because he would rather win the game on the pitch.
