Japan is a country where sex occupies an odd cultural role. On the one hand, the island country has one of the biggest and fastest growing sex industries in the world.

When the researchers made estimations to account for people who report no heterosexual intercourse but may have had same-sex intercourse, around 5 percent of people, or one in 20, aged 30 to 39 years old would still lack sexual experience.

The authors said while it had been suggested that an increasing number of Japanese adults were sexually inexperienced, their study was the first to address this issue using nationally representative data.

Choo said that while some Japanese heterosexuals may be inexperienced sexually, relationships mean different things to different people.

Cyrus Ghaznavi, the study's lead author, said: "Although the discussion around cause and effect becomes very complex when considering who becomes sexually experienced and who remains a virgin, we show that heterosexual inexperience is at least partly a socioeconomic issue for men".

And yet, a new study has found that Japanese adults have their first heterosexual sexual experiences later than their counterparts in the United States and the UK.

The research is based on data from seven rounds of the National Fertility Survey of Japan, carried out between 1987 and 2015, which is administered by a unit overseen by the Japanese health ministry.

According to the study, which was published Monday in the journal BMC Public Health and was based on data from the National Fertility Survey of Japan, the percentage of heterosexual women in the country between the ages of 18 and 39 who had never had sex increased from 21.7 percent in 1992 to 24.6 percent in 2015. Around one to five percent of men in the corresponding age are virgins.

"The situation of individuals who remain sexually inexperienced due to difficulties in finding a partner. maybe considered in future policies aimed at increasing Japan's birth rate", the authors wrote.

In the 35-39 age bracket, the figures were 8.9 per cent for women and 9.5 per cent for men.

The paper defined heterosexual sexual experience as vaginal intercourse between men and women.

Mr Ghaznavi said: "The most informative aspect of sexual inactivity involves those who have opted out of or are, for some reason they can not control, excluded from the mating market, regardless of their previous sexual experience".

"My students can't use the word "penis" or 'vagina, ' and if a woman expresses any knowledge or interest in sex, you're seen as a fallen women". People have pointed the finger to everything from anime to porn to even women not pulling their weight. Someone who has a permanent full-time employment and in a million-the city lives, has, however, more frequent sexual intercourse.

Analyzing data from 2010, the team also found that inexperience correlated with unemployment, temporary or part-time work and low income among men between 25 and 39. Meanwhile, women were more likely to have had intercourse if their personal incomes were low, which may be explained by the fact that most married women in Japan become full-time homemakers that do not earn a wage.

Whatever may be the cause of this dramatic sex drought, widescale celibacy is a big problem for the Japanese government.

Ueda's team also suggested that Japan could be leading a global trend toward sexual inexperience between heterosexual couples, with sexual inactivity rising among young adults in Germany and the U.S., suggesting a global shift in attitudes on sex.
