Uganda would consider giving Omar al-Bashir asylum

Report by BBC and other worldwide news outlets on Wednesday, April 17, afternoon indicated Bashir who has been under house arrest since his ouster on April 11 was taken to Kobar maximum security prison in Khartoum, Sudan's capital city.

Witnesses said there was a heavy deployment of soldiers and members of the paramilitary Rapid Support Force outside the prison in north Khartoum.

The Ugandan minister said his country is closely watching the situation in Sudan and hopes for the peaceful transition of power, Uganda's SoftPower News reported.

The protests have maintained momentum over the past five months, culminating in a four-day, 24-hour sit in outside military headquarters last week where hundreds of thousands took to the streets of Khartoum. We have been shot and many have died.

"For us, in the first stage, the transitional government stage, we will play a role in ... establishing a democratic state", said Gamaria Omar, a member of the Sudanese Professionals Association, a grouping of teachers, engineers and doctors which led the protests.

Sudan's protests erupted in December over fuel and food shortages then quickly escalated to massive street protests calling for Bashir to step down.

While there have been scenes of celebration - with demonstrators singing and waving their national flag - the protest site has grown more tense amid concerns the army will try to clear the sit-in with force.

"Our demand is that women have representation in the transitional civilian council", she said.

"There are troops in vehicles mounted with machine-guns near the prison", a witness told AFP news agency.

On Wednesday thousands of protesters remained at the site, cheering each other on despite looking worn out.

But not all protest groups are demanding the military be sidelined.

"I feel those people who are doing the sit-in are like my sons and daughters".

Aya Abdel Aziz, a 22-year-old medical student, said she chose to join the march, which started from the University of Khartoum, to press for women's rights as well as handover of power to the people. The transitional military council has ruled out extraditing the country's former leader but have said he could be tried within Sudan itself.

The coup team led by Defence Minister Awad Ibn Auf had indicated that al-Bashir was under arrest and was being kept in a safe place. After his ouster, which the military said was in response to the demands of the people, the army appointed a military council to rule for two years or less while elections are organised.

The military council confirmed the phone call and said Mr El Sisi was expected to visit Sudan in the coming days.

In a separate development, Sudanese rebels on Wednesday declared a unilateral, three-month ceasefire in areas under their control in the country's southern Blue Nile state.

The decree applies to bank accounts and holdings of foreign currency as well as precious metals and jewelry inside and outside Sudan, the council said.

The African Union's Peace and Security Council on Monday called for the military transition council to transfer power to a transitional civilian-led authority within 15 days or risk Sudan being suspended from the AU.
