For the first time women to join Taliban delegation for Afghan peace talks

Zalmay Khalilzad, the USA special envoy who is spearheading Washington's push for a peace settlement, called the Taliban announcement "reckless".

"We're trying to end the longest war in the United States history and save the lives of Afghans and American soldiers alike".

Ambassador Khalilzad said he met with Turkish President's Chief Advisor Ibrahim Kalin in Washington on Monday and appreciated Turkey's commitment to AFghanistan.

"Turkey's willingness to support the Afghan Peace Process is welcome", he added.

The US special envoy began his latest peace mission on March 25, visiting Afghanistan, Britain, Belgium, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Qatar. We said nothing relating to women in negotiation team & neither do we believe it is necessary.

"The non-Taliban delegation that was in Moscow [in February] could be expanded next week to include some government officials, but acting in their private capacities as the insurgents have refused to hold formal talks with Kabul", it adds.

The meeting on 19-21 April in Doha will be the latest in a series of talks between Taliban and USA officials and is expected to include a 150-strong delegation of Afghan politicians and civil society figures.

The officials of both - Taliban and Afghan government - stated on Monday that dozens of women would attend the next round of Afghan peace talks, which will formally begin on April 19 in Doha.

At other destinations, the USA special envoy met "allies and partners" and discussed with them "the status of peace talks and to coordinate sustained commitment by the worldwide community to peace and development in Afghanistan", the state department said.
