Gomes joined Everton a year ago on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona but the Toffees do not have an option to buy him at the end of the season.

The north London club have been tracking the progress of the 25-year-old since weighing up a move for him in January 2018, but could face further competition from other clubs.

It is understood Spurs chief scout Steve Hitchen was sent by Mauricio Pochettino to watch Gomes in the Merseyside derby in December, although the midfielder only came on as a 76th-minute substitute.

There is now no clause or obligation in his current loan deal, but the LaLiga champions are hoping to at least make back their initial €35m investment - which both clubs can afford.

From that point, the Irish buckled down and closed the game on a 26-12 run led by who else but Arike Ogunbowale . The clutch gene has a way of emerging late, just as it did for quarterback Joe Montana in the fourth quarter.

Gomes is keen to wait until the end of the season to take a call on his future, but he is not expecting to return to Barcelona in the summer.

When asked about his future, Gomes said: "To be honest, I try not to think about that".

Gomes joined Barca from Valencia in the summer of 2016 and made 78 appearances for the Spanish champions before heading for the Premier League. So I try to think only in the present. "Now it's about finishing the season in the best way possible, to give my best in every training session and in every match".
